My mother played piano at home and my grandfather was a conductor,” he recalled.

“I never met him because he moved in the 30s to Australia and never came back. He died a few years before I was born.

“The influence of my mother was quite strong.

“The sound of the piano music she was playing — Bach, Chopin — was around me and it was like a constant fire in the house. It kept my emotions awake in a special way.”
